Happy Wednesday, everyone!
We had fun working on crafts and decorating cookies and gingerbread houses this afternoon! Tomorrow is an Early Release day, at 12:30pm. Homework: *Last Reading test of Quarter 2: Vocabulary Lesson 15 test on Thursday. Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Powers Ferry Spelling Bee today, especially my students in my Reading & Writing classes: Michaela, Journey, Bruno, and Haley! Journey was the runner-up! Awesome job spelling and standing up before all of your peers. :)
Happy Monday!
We are finishing up some writing and research projects for our Writing class. Students are researching about immigration in the 1700s-1800s through Ellis Island and Angel Island. They will have a written paper and a green screen video of their report. They are also working on a biography about a famous person from Social Studies standards, from the 1920s and 1930s. They are making a Microsoft Sway project (like PowerPoint) on the computers. The only homework/test for this week is in Reading: Lesson 15 vocabulary multiple choice test is Thursday, 12/19. Tomorrow is the schoolwide Spelling Bee! It starts at 8:30am in the Cafeteria. Wednesday is the holiday parties in classes, from 1:00-2:00pm. Students are welcome to bring chips, cookies, veggie tray, fruit, or juice boxes, etc., to share with their classmates. Thursday, 12/19 and Friday, 12/20 are Early Release Days, at 12:30pm. Friday, 12/20, is Polar Express Day. Students are welcome to wear school-appropriate pajamas. I will have popcorn and hot cocoa for our snack. Hello, and Happy Thursday!
Reading: We are working on quoting accurately form what we read, and determining clues from the visuals we see, in order to make an inference. Students took their antonyms quiz for vocabulary Lesson 15. Spelling: Test on Lesson 17 words; practice page is due. **Tonight is the Holiday Performance by 2nd Grade and Chorus, at 6:30pm!** **Tomorrow is Chick-fil-A biscuit pack sales, to benefit the 5th grade end of year activities. $4.00 in the car line!** It was a chilly day today, but we had a crackling fire going on the SmartBoard screen!
Reading: We continue to work on quoting accurately from the texts we read. We then use our background knowledge, plus the quoted information, to answer questions. This is our inferencing strategy. We also call it, "scrubbing our brains for information," because answers do not jump out at us, we have to really think it through. **Vocabulary Lesson 15 quiz on antonyms of 10 words--tomorrow. Spelling: Lesson 17 definitions (20) and super sentences (5) are due Friday. Grammar: Using adverbs as comparative (compare two or more nouns) or superlative (compare three or more nouns). Finish 83 and 84 of packet. Happy Tuuesday!
In Reading, we continue to work on providing an inference to a question about what we have read. *Vocabulary Lesson 15 quiz on antonyms is this Thursday (10 questions). Spelling: Lesson 17 packet is only 1 page due Friday--20 definitions, and 5 super sentences. Grammar: We are working on adverbs (how, where, when) and how they enhance the verbs or or adjectives in a sentence. Complete pages 81 and 82 in your packet. Happy Monday! *Students, if you didn't turn in Spelling Week 16 packet on Friday, please turn it in tomorrow, for a classwork grade. Homework: Spelling: Start studying Lesson 17 words. The packet is listed below. You only have to do definitions for all 20, and 5 super sentences (your choice of words). Reading: Vocabulary Lesson 14 tests were returned today. If you have a re-test note, please get it signed by your parent. The re-test is this Wednesday, December 11th, at 7:15am. There were only a couple of re-test letters this time! Great news. We held our classroom spelling bees today, in preparation for the schoolwide spelling bee, on December 17th (beginning at 8:30am). Congratulations to the winners who will represent Mrs. Alwardt' s class: Journey and Michaela; and from Ms. Alston's class: Haley and Bruno!
*For tomorrow, don't forget to study for the vocabulary lesson 14 test tomorrow. We reviewed the definitions and antonyms of each word in Reading class today. Happy Tuesday, everyone!
Reading: We are working on finding information, and quoting accurately, from a text, especially when we making inferences in informational (true facts) texts. Inferences = Using the text + our background knowledge (schema) = a summary or conclusion about what we learned. *Please finish the last part of our "Inferences" packet about "Why do meerkat guards sit at the highest point?" Grammar: Finish common and proper adjectives, page 69 and page 70 (top). Welcome back to the last three weeks of Quarter 2!
The Spelling Lesson 15 packet was due the Friday before break. However, I will accept them tomorrow. A copy of the word list is above. *Wednesday, 12/4, is our classroom spelling bee! Please study the "Difficulty Level: Two Bee" double sided page, so you will be successful! The schoolwide spelling bee is December 17th! *Thursday, 12/5, is our Vocabulary Lesson 14 Test--we are in week 2 of this lesson. We will review the words again tomorrow in groups. |
